How to measure fuel economy accurately

For a practical km/L figure, fill the tank or add a known amount of fuel, record the distance travelled, then use the amount spent and the fuel price to work out how many litres were used. The longer the distance, the less a small filling or odometer error affects the result.

Fuel economy formula

Litres used = Amount spent ÷ Price per litre
Fuel economy (km/L) = Distance travelled ÷ Litres used

Trip cost formula

Fuel required = Trip distance ÷ Vehicle km/L
Trip cost = Fuel required × Price per litre

What can change real fuel consumption?

Traffic, tyre pressure, vehicle load, air conditioning, road gradient, driving speed and engine condition can all affect fuel use. For that reason, this calculator should be treated as an estimate based on the values you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Is higher km/L better?

Yes. A higher km/L figure means the vehicle travels farther on each litre of fuel.

What is L/100 km?

It shows how many litres are used to travel 100 km. Unlike km/L, a lower L/100 km value means better fuel economy.

Can I use any currency?

Yes. The calculations use the numeric price and amount you enter, so the same currency is carried through the cost results.

Why might my next tank give a different result?

Fuel consumption naturally changes with traffic, route, weather, driving style and how accurately the fuel amount and distance were measured.
